The food here is amazing and you can get some traditional dishes that you might not normally find in other restaurants. I grew up eating spicy food and this place totally satisfies my craving for a taste of mom's cooking. Took my parents here one time and they are such snobs when it comes to schezwan food, but even they enjoyed it.My favorite is the garlic pork belly cold appetizer. It's so flavorful and really hits the spot. Stinky tofu was pretty good, you can't compare it to the kind you get in China, but it was decent enough if a bit on the sour side. Ordered the stinky tofu pot with seafood.Love all the fried stuff with the "explosive chilli," majority of the plate is the chili pepper, but the fish/chicken/tofu/whatever is so well flavored. I once had the hot pot here before which is really good (can get a bit pricy depending on how much stuff you order).Definitely recommend trying some of the more unique menu items, the "over rice" dishes are good/cheap but you can do that anywhere. Try something new. Prices are reasonable and portions are big.

CASH ONLY!I came here for a late night dinner since it is opened until 11 pm. I ordered the stinky tofu hot pot and the spicy lamb ribs. Both were delicious and up to par with other Schezwan places I've been to in Southern California. The rice that they serve with their food balances out the saltiness of the dishes. I definitely would recommend coming here if you have an Asian palate like myself because the food is really authentic.

No bueno. maybe I ordered the wrong stuff, the szcheaun soup was super greasy and the meat tasted like an ear or a cheek, the onion pancakes were soaked an oil(yuck)...prob would have done better with some traditional dishes like green beans and orange chicken *sighs* ill give them two stars for the good customer service. I heard such good things about this place...might try them once more and order different stuff...

I GOT FOOD POISONING FROM COLD DRINKS the day after xmas 2012. Less than 15 minutes after drinking a Lychee icy (2 for 1) drink, I had a fit of uncontrollable vomiting and crazy stomach cramps. The vomiting lasted for a couple of hours and than dry heaves.I also had a spicey oily salty soup, which was good and was served boiling hot at your table. The other guest ate the same soup but did not have the cold drink. Consequently he was not poisoned.

The braised beef tendon stew with garlic was really good and flavorful. The inner heat sensor went soaring. The SF location (Clement & eighth) had mild dishes, but I think the chef went chinese cleaver heavy on the peppers and seeds. Still good, despite the hurt.

We went here yesterday because a friend recommended it. Inside it's very dark and decor was very dated. We ordered the Garlic Fried Tofu, Calamari with Basil, and Chicken with RED FLAME OIL I think that's the name of it. The Garlic Fried Tofu was delicious, it's definitely recommended. The Calamari was okay, a bit salty. The Chicken with RED FLAME OIL is well oily. It was okay but it came in a whole bowl of oil, I had to put it on the plate to get rid of most of the oil. The taste was okay, nothing special. They have a big menu and have a lot of selections so it was difficult to pick out an item. Maybe other dishes will be good but it's definitely worth a shot if you did your research on Yelp to see which item people recommend. I would go here just to eat the Garlic Fried Tofu alone.

Don't be intimidated by the restaurant's name, there are items on the menu that are non-spicy. My friend ordered the pork over rice dish, it was HUGE! It came in a very big portion. It tasted crispy and more on the fatty side. I ordered the level 3 cumin based lamb hotpot, it was delicious! I also ordered a side of stinky tofu and it was not bad but my friend had a horrible reaction to the smell - definitely not for people that have a sensitive nose. The tea they served here was not even tea, it was lukewarm and had a faint yellow color. I did not enjoy the diluted tea so I had to flag down the waiter to get water instead.

Just had my second visit here. The first time, my friend made me try the stinky tofu....WARNING...if you are a gweilo/gringo like myself...the closest thing I could compare it to is biting into a homeless person's sock who wanders around Civic Center BART. I understand it's comfort food and I'm being wildy ignorant, but I honestly almost fainted. The won ton soup is very fresh and didn't make me feel dehydrated since it wasn't overly salty. The string beans are very flavorful and is a great side dish to anything. The tofu pockets were just ok...I would pass on it next visit. The garlic pork was AMAZING! A millions flavors come to life and do the conga on your taste buds! It's one of those dishes that when you think of it, you salivate.CASH ONLY. This place is in a pretty shady place of Oakland, so lock your cars and bring in your belongings if you come. Inside is pretty nondescript. Menu is huge, so we stuck with the 3 dishes for $22 deal and added a beef noodle soup. For our three dishes, we got minced pork with explosive chili, chicken in garlic sauce, and string beans. All three were pretty good. The pork dish was loaded with jalapeños to make it explosive, the chicken dish came with a decent number and variety of Chinese vegetables, and the string beans were well executed. The beef noodle soup was good too, but be wary if you let the noodles sit too long they will get soggy. Nothing out of this world. Just decent place to get some spicy Chinese food.

I swear I am drooling just thinking about this dish! man it was good- spicy fried rice: this is your typical combination fried rice, but they used hot chili powder and their signature special hot oil while cooking it so you could taste the delicious spicy flavor! mmh good.- tofu pockets: stuffed with bean sprouts in the middle and bathed in sesame oil, we did not enjoy this dish at all.Overall, I am so excited to have tried this pace and just can not wait to go back and try more! They serve a fantastic garlic pork shoulder (yuan ti). It takes 20 minutes to properly steam it, so must be ordered in advance. I'd definitely recommend it. The meat is moist and tender and falls off the bone; has a delicious proportion of fat in every bite (as pork meat has); and the spices provide a certain exoticness, yet it still remains very tasty. Also had the tofu with bamboo - the tofu was soft and fresh. Excellent.Came here on a Sunday afternoon, so there was ample street parking.

At first I was a bit adamant about going here due to it's rep for having very spicy items. I was worried, as someone who doesn't have quite the iron stomach, that this would be a bad decision, but thankfully I'm glad I gave it a try with my coworkers.Regardless of whether you like spicy food or not, the dishes here pretty darn good. Portions are huge, so expect to have more family-style dinners rather than personal dishes for the most part. Keep in mind that these giant portions also translate to noodle soups and regular soups - my friend and I were working on our soups for the entire time we were there and barely made head way in lowering the levels of our broth. I had the pork chop noodle soup which was okay, but I would instead recommend the minced beef soup. The broth is very delicious and flavorful!Come here with a big appetite and a large group of people and you'll be pretty set. The only thing I didn't like as much were the iced drinks. Another friend of mine split the 2 for $3 deal with me and the drink was more icy than it was peachy when we ordered. It feels kind of hole-in-the-wall when you first get here, but it's easily accessible location (super close to 12th street BART) and the service here is very fast and attentive!

Not disappointed.Got the Shanghai rice cake and a braised fish fillet with one pepper symbol (so I guess...mild?) and two bowls of rice for 3 people. Total around $22, and we even needed one takeout container. Both were really good. Oh.... I'm still thinking about the crispy tofu surrounded with flaky mounds of garlic. The tofu is crisp and airy. This dish is not spicy at all for those of you that can't eat spicy. If you love garlic this dish has plenty of it. This was one of the two favorites of the table.I also got the scallion pancake. Think of this somewhat like a Chinese version of a tortilla kinda but deep fried. It's made of many thin layered sheets put together with scallions in it. What I didnt like about this dish is that it was still dripping out oil. I wish they drained the oil out of more before serving. My Chinese friend introduce me to the boil fish filet dish with cabbage in chili from another restaurant and I fell in love with it after. Here, instead of cabbage they use another type of greens maybe chinese broccoli??? I'm not perticularly sure. The dish was marked with three chili peppers so we asked them to make it medium which wasnt spicy at all. I think we should have kept it at the three level. This dish was still good here. I would get it again from here. This dish was the other favorite at our table. We also ordered the Mangolian beef from here. This dish wasn't bad either. It had a little savory and sweetness to it. It wasn't the favorite of all the dishes, but it wasn't badService is pretty good here especially considering that it's mainly one girl taking everybody's order as well as cleaning the tables when she can. She is attentative to the patrons when they call for her. A guy will come out and help her here and there. When really necessary they'll bring out someone from the back to clean the table. This place is small. It probably has about ten to fifteen tables at the most if I can recall correctly.

We certainly didn't enjoy the meal, and he stained my shirt with a few inadvertent chili spice splotches. Don't wear white; hotpots are messy! The level of spice between the hotpot and non-liquid dishes is not comparable - we ordered the mongolian beef and kung pao chicken, both at level 2, and they were very mild (and tasty!). WARNING: ONE SPICE IS ALREADY REALLY SPICY!!!!...unless they just screwed us over. HahaThe reason why I wanted to come here was for the Szechuan beef noodle soup. http://www.yelp.com/biz_… I was expecting it to taste similar to my FAVORITE spicy beef noodle soup back in SoCal (A&J in Irvine). But I was sadly disappointed :( The soup was SO spicy that I couldn't even eat it!! I didn't say "mild" or anything because there were a lot of dishes on the menu that were even spicier, like up to level 4. So it's reasonable to assume level 1 wouldn't be bad right?!Neither my mom or my youngest sister could take it either. My mom lost her appetite after that. It literally tasted like red pepper soup! We had to ask if they could add water to make it less spicy. It tasted a little better, but still =\ sad sad sad.. even after taking it home and adding a lot of water, it just didn't taste good. 1 star :(On the other hand, my dad and my other sister (I have 2 younger) both do not like spicy food and got the 3 dishes for $22 deal, all non-spicy foods, which were actually REALLY delicious!1) string beans - 4.5 stars. http://www.yelp.com/biz_… amazing!! even better than our favorite New China in Union City!! It was crunchy, flavorful, ground pork was satayed deliciously. Yum!!! One of the best string beans we've ever had2) Mushroom chicken - 4.5 stars http://www.yelp.com/biz_… oh man, the sauce in this was to die for! It was so good, some white sauce that tasted like they used some wine. I wish I knew exactly what they used!!3) soft tofu with shrimp in white wine sauce - 4 stars http://www.yelp.com/biz_… good too! man these 3 dishes for $22 deal were on POINT!My sister (the one who doesn't like spicy foods) also got the shanghai style thick noodles with pork. http://www.yelp.com/biz_… 3 stars. It was good, not bad. Tasted like chow mein. And here is a picture of disgusting chicken feet which was not what we expected... http://www.yelp.com/biz_… we were expecting the kind of black bean flavor, red colored, and warm chicken feet!! Not these gross looking, cold, flavorless chicken feet! I told the waitress and apologized that this was actually not what we expected, and she was kind enough to just take it away. That's good service +1OVERALL - 3 starsThis place was pretty much a hit or miss. I just find it funny that the non-spicy foods tasted better than the spicy dishes at a restaurant called "Spices." This place is pretty good. They have like a million items on the menu, all sorts of lunch/dinner/group deals, meat-heavy entrees, rice/noodle dishes, and hotpots. I forget the exact names, but I always get the spiciest thing at any restaurant, so I've tried a lot of the dishes with 2 or 3 peppers next to the name, and they're good. Here's the thing, though. It's really not that spicy. I always ask for maximum spicy, and it is indeed delicious, but not all that hot. Maybe it's because I'm white and they tone it down because most crackers are complete wusses when it comes to hot food. Anyway, their dishes are only hot if you stuff all the jalapenos in your mouth at the same time. Still though, delicious.Prices are fair but not great. Expect about $10 per dish after tax. Oh, and cash only. Service is generally pretty good. You have to signal to get served at first or get the check at the end of the meal, but after you've ordered, you can expect everything to come out in under 15 minutes.Overall, a really nice place but by no means balls-to-the-walls spicy. Also, I should mention that they stay open very late for a place in Oakland, I think til around 11:30 or so.

Fortunately, this place is open until 11 AND it had a lot of good reviews. The menu is pretty extensive. I let my friend order us the smoked bacon dish that had one chili pepper next to the item (as opposed to the three chili peppers next to other items) and the garlic bok choy dish.O-M-G, the smoked bacon dish was basically a "try to find the fatty slices of bacon in the pile of chili peppers and jalapenos. It was bad for a person who does not eat spicy food. If you want to spin a positive, I guess it's good for those who want to train for eating spicy foods. The garlic bok choy was okay.We ended up ordering another dish, the kung pao chicken because the fatty slices of bacon were not doing it for me. It was interesting to see that the kung pao chicken had two chilli peppers next to the item listing, but only had a few actual chili peppers in the dish. I could actually eat it!I'm definitely open to trying more things on the menu because there are so many 5 star reviews with other food recommendations. Plus, I've decided that i'm in spicy training.oh, and if you don't want to stare at chicken feet pictures while you eat, don't sit at the third table from the right.

I really loved it and Iv never had intestine before. Also, the wonton in spicy red oil and stinky tofu: really really good.
